MTN Targets Nationwide Mobile Data Coverage

South Africa's second biggest mobile operator by subscribers MTN plans to spend about ZAR8bn (US$1bn) to increase the number of 3G base stations in the country for faster data transmission and wider network coverage, according to CTO Lambo Kanagaratnam. The company is also ready to launch LTE services in 2012 if it receives a licence from the government. We are encouraged by the increasing focus on data services by South Africa's network operators considering the country's high mobile penetration rate and fewer subscriber growth opportunities.
