U-Com Raises US$25mn For Network Expansion In Burundi

Burundi's biggest mobile operator by subscribers U-Com, which operates under the brand name leo, has secured a US$25mn loan from the IFC to expand its network coverage in the country. This development bodes well for Burundi's telecoms market, which has been held back underinvestment, especially in rural areas where majority of the population live. Meanwhile, we welcome the funding by the IFC. which appears to have emanated from a US$700mn portfolio set aside to support the expansion of telecoms services to underserved areas in Africa.
