This is part of a drive to increase domestic production of consumer electronics in Argentina. The administration of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner implemented protectionist measures to boost domestic production, particularly in the southern province of Tierra del Fuego. The measures have significantly boosted the economy of the region, which historically suffered economically due to its remote location. However, BMI remains concerned that in the long term, the costs of Argentina's protectionist policies will outweigh the benefits for the sector, and for the Argentine economy.
