Venezuela Mobile Handsets Hit By Production Inefficiencies

Despite announcements that Venezuela's state mobile handset producer Orinoquia surpassed production targets in Q111 and is expected to produce 700,000 Vergatorio handsets this year, BMI remains sceptical about production targets for the handset being met. Although BMI is hopeful such handsets will increase mobile penetration among poor and marginalised Venezuelans, and the partnership with reputable Chinese firms mitigates concerns over quality, BMI believes the production and exportation targets for the handsets are too optimistic.
