Technicolor Withdrawal From YouView: BMI Points Up Trend For Integrated Decoders

YouView, the consortium building a dedicated national IPTV platform in the UK, announced the withdrawal of a key technology supplier, set-top box (STB) manufacturer Technicolor. The move again raises concerns about the consortium's ability to deliver a working commercial service on schedule. While it is possible Technicolor proved unable to develop a profitable end-user device that met YouView's technical requirements, BMI believes the company's withdrawal reflects the trend in the UK consumer sector for integrated TV sets rather than standalone plug-in devices such as STBs.
